Altarnun Market is a new venture which started in July 2016 but which promises to become a thriving and popular venue.
It is held monthly on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 2-4pm.
Most markets are held in the mornings but it was decided to hold this in the afternoon as there has been nowhere in the village for the increasing number of visitors to get a cup of tea and refreshment. Altarnun has appeared as the venue for the marriage of Doc Martin and Louisa as well as featuring in Daphne Du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn.
The venue for the market is the pretty St Nonna’s Church Hall set delightfully alongside Penpont Water which flows by the Church.
The stallholders produce a huge range of beautifully crafted wares including
- Jewellery greetings cards
- Hand-painted silk scarves
- Hand made children’s clothes
- Decorated glassware
- Basket work (including willow coffins)
- Craft materials,
- Seasonal goods
- Greetings cards
- Preserves
- Upcycled goods
- Plants and bulbs
- Local produce
The stallholders offer any surplus fruit and vegetables for sale in the spirit of the original farmers’ markets.
Cream teas and cakes are served with all the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the church hall.
Although this is a new venture it is already a popular event.
