Dante Summer Festival

Category:

The Dante Summer Festival - Bringing Music to Life from the 10th to the 15th July 2017 at St German's, Calstock, Callington, Launceston and Tavistock.  Musical themes will be Russian, Czech and Irish, plus a special concert in Launceston celebrating the centenary of the much loved Cornish poet, Charles Causley.

Join the renowned Dante Quartet and friends for a feast of concerts at beautiful venues in the Tamar Vall3ey.  This year's festival features Beethoven's quartets and romantic works by Schumann and Mendelssohn, interlaced with music from Scotaland.  Exciting concerts, alongside open rehearsals, workshops, guided walks, shared meals and children's events - something to inspire and entertain everyone.

We open in Launceston's magnificent Town Hall with an evocative programme including Mendelssohn, Schumann and the late Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, with guest appearances from the newly formed East Cornwall Youth String Orchestra.

After a guided walk around the wooded landscape of East Penrest Farm, Lezant Church provides the perfect atmospher for Sally Beamish's Reed Stanzas, based on a haunting Scottish Air and one of Beethoven's most celebrated late quartests.  Calstock Old  Chapel - always a popular venue - hosts an all-Beethoven programme preceded by a delicous dinner.

Cornish-born pianist Daniel Tong joins us for two concerts; while on the non-classical side, the legendary Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis fly in from Edinburgh, bringing their unique blend of traditional Scottish fiddling and song, plus The Red Earth, an innovative story-telling show. The theme of story-telling continues in a Dante concert of solo pieces inspired by tales and legends.

Finally, after a cream tea and an illustrated talk on Schumann, we finish in the magnificent Church of St Eustachius in Tavistock with a rousing performance of Schumann’s glorious Piano Quintet.

Don’t miss the chance to hear the Dante Quartet playing on your doorstep, or if you live further away, come and spend a few days enjoying great music in one of the most beautiful parts of Engand.
