The Wharf Arts Centre

The Wharf is located between the River Tavy and Tavistock Canal. It was built in the 18th century as a busy industrial centre, and was converted to its present form by the local council in 1995. Since then it has been privately run as an arts centre offering live music, cinema, theatre and other events. There is also an Art Gallery, a popular Coffee Shop and a Licensed Bar with a uniquie waterside terrace.

The auditorium, Coffee Shop and Licensed Bar have full disabled access and facilities, however the Art Gallery is only accessible via stairs.

Tavistock’s large main car park, Bedford Car Park, is adjacent to the Wharf and provides free parking after 6pm. From Tavistock Bus Station on Plymouth Road it is just a two minute walk to the Wharf. Meadowlands Swimming Pool is next door together with The Meadows park, and Tavistock Library is nearby.

Come and see your favourite bands at one of the finest live music venues in the South West! We have a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, together with the licensed bar and coffee shop. Our cinea shows current films from blockbusters to the latest releases. Local and national theatre companies bring many varied productions to The Wharf.

The Cinema - Why travel to Plymouth or Exeter when you have a fantastic cinema on your doorstep.  At the Wharf we show a variety of current films on our big screen with full Dolby surround sound so you’re not missing out on the big cinema experience.  Sweets, snacks and ice creams to enjoy during the film are available from the Box Office at sensible prices.  For what’s on refer to our website.

Live Music - The Wharf has been described in the press as one of the finest live music venues in the South West. And we have recently upgraded the sound system again to make gigs even more enjoyable! We book a wide variety of bands so there should be something to suit your musical tastes. Some of the original artists who have appeared at the Wharf include Joe Bonamassa, Seth Lakeman, The Hamsters, Buddy Whittington, Paul Young, Brotherhood of Man, Hayseed Dixie, Stan Webb & Chicken Shack, Albert Lee, Mostly Autumn, Ralph McTell, Wishbone Ash, Chas & Dave, Midge Ure, Larry Miller, The Levellers, Elkie Brooks, Pentangle, Mad Dog Mcrea, Nerina Pallot, Dr. Feelgood, Focus, Dean Friedman, Carvin Jones, Kiki Dee, Walter Trout, Imelda May, Adrian Edmondson and Steve Hackett.

Theatre - The Wharf hosts a wide variety of theatrical productions by local and national theatre groups, including everything from Shakespeare to musicals and pantomimes

Live Performance Broadcasts - Live Performance Broadcasts are an exciting new development. They bring world-class music and theatre to venues equipped with digital projectors and surround sound systems – including the Wharf. Examples include:

  • Plays from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon.
  • Royal Ballet and Opera from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
  • The Bolshoi Ballet from the Moscow State Theatre.
  • Opera from the Metropolitan Opera House, New York.
  • Opera and theatre from La Scala, Milan.

These events are captured as they happen by an outside broadcast crew and transmitted live via satellite to chosen venues. Also some special events such as Queen in Concert are recorded for posterity and transmitted by the same satellite system at a later date.

At the Wharf we are most fortunate, because unlike nearly all the venues receiving these broadcasts, we are not just a cinema, but also a theatre and concert auditorium with all the acoustics and equipment needed to reproduce these events with the utmost high fidelity. Our technical director, Stephen Court, and Stage Manager, David Reese, were trained by the BBC, major recording studios and the Royal Opera House, with experience in live music venues all over the world. Together they have created a 10-channel high-fidelity surround sound system at the Wharf to suit these Live Performance Broadcasts.

About the Art Gallery - The Art Gallery is a feature of the Wharf which is much respected, not just within the town community, but on a national scale, exhibiting work by local and international artists. Since the Wharf Gallery opened in 1996 we have hosted major art exhibitions and we always welcome enquiries from exhibitors. The gallery is organised by our resident arts consultant Chris Burchell who brings a wealth of experience in the art world to the Wharf.

Artists, Painters, Photographers and Sculptors from Germany, France, Holland, Spain, Finland, Greenland, Azerbaijan and the USA have joined us here in Tavistock to display their diverse styles and put forward their artistic points of view. As well as individual artists, local schools, art societies and groups have featured in our programme. The Tavistock Group of Artists, Artists in Cornwall, The Nebula Group and Gwynngala have all mounted exciting and successful shows.

Housed in the Wharf, The Gallery is supported and surrounded by many other interesting activities. West Devon Borough Council and Olympus Optical Limited have generously supported exhibitions by renowned British photographers such as David Bailey and Barry Lategan. Photojournalist Nick Danziger has also exhibited during the period of his TV series on Channel 4.

The Wharf Gallery has earned a high reputation for its leading edge exhibitions featuring artists such as Barrie Cook, attracting viewers all over the UK. We invite further sponsorship from private and public bodies.
